Interlanguage:
Interlangauage is when a second language learner is not yet proficient in his/her target language yet by mixing his/her first language into it. This note I received from a student shows this. The student used both languages in communicating his idea. This shows that this student is reaching more and more percentage of using Chinese. Although he still uses English in the note, this student was able to incorporate what we've learned in class into this note and produce this short paragraph by himself. The student is more than half way of reaching the target language. Being in first grade, I'm very proud of how far our students have come in learning the language.

We had a mock Youth Chinese Test today.
Some students had a lot of trouble with filling out the bubble sheet/ scantron which caused their scores to drop majorly. A few students scored well on the test; however, since they didn't fill out the bubble sheets correctly, their scores were much lower.
Next week, we will have the actual YCT. I'll make sure students understand how to fill out the answer sheets correctly before the exam.

Monday (05/04) :
One of our objectives is that "students will identify objects that move and do not move when blown during the experiment individually." The first two pictures below shows students blowing on circular and movable objects in a race. After a couple times, I put out objects like pyramids, cubes, and cones where they're not movable. Students insisted saying that they're able to blow and move those. But after a couple tries, they learned that these objects cannot be blown. The learned that any objects with circular shapes can be moved when blown. A student put a cone on its side and then was able to blow it.

I asked some students to roll objects and measure the distance with footsteps. After some rounds of experimenting, they learned that objects with flat edges roll slower than circular ones.

Thursday (05/07):
We watched a video about "moving rocks" at Death Valley National Park.
Many students said that it's because it's extremely windy, and that's why the rocks are moving. I asked that why the rocks in Utah won't move even that it's windy. Students were unable to answer this question. I then showed them a picture of a lake completely frozen. Then, I showed them that the the ice is slippery. They then figured out that the slippery ice tops (cause by the cold during winter) and winds will make the rock move.
